この「蝋燭物語」開発は2年前から始まりまして、何か松井蝋燭さんのために考えようということで、最初は学生を連れて工房を見学に行きました。そのとき初めて私たちが「和蝋燭」について何も知らないことにあらためてびっくりすると同時に、ここまで手間ひま掛けて自然に優しい材料だけで作られていたことに感心しました。そこが出発点です。

　つまり、こんな素敵な和蝋燭について何も知らない人にまず「和蝋燭って何？和蝋燭ってどんな風に作られるの？だからどんな付き合いをしたら良いの？」といった素朴な疑問を特に若い人たちに伝えることがポイントだということで、学生達と一致しました。

　そのためには、使用される材料を一緒にパッケージングしてみよう。そして、それぞれの材料にまつわるいろいろを若者が（つまり制作する学生自身が）理解できる表現でパンフレットにまとめよう。さらに、ただ箱に入ったパッケージでは今までの蝋燭製品との差別化ができないので、よりあったかで優しい風合いを持った布 にくるんでみてはどうか？といったようにすすんできて、最初に発案した製品が布巻きパッケージでした。そして、今回売るのは「蝋燭」といったモノではな く、「和蝋燭にまつわる物語」を売るのだ、ということでした。そこで商品名がずばり「蝋燭物語」です。

　さらに、この商品は若者に手に取って欲しいということで、あまり「和」や「伝統」にこだわらず、あくまでも「本物をカジュアルに」をコンセプトに、布も 敢えて生成りのデニムにし、マークもモダンにしました。

　もう一つの「箱」入りの製品は、布製ができたあとに、商工会議所でこの製品の話しをいろいろしている時に、確かに布にくるむ発想は面白いけれど、「開いてみないと分からない」「布製は、例えばミュ-ジアムショップ等では売り難いのでは----」といった意見が若い女性所員から出て、なるほどと思い、急遽、透明な箱に入れたバージョンを作ることにしたものです。あわてて作ったにしては、以外とうまくまとまりました。

　蝋燭立ても学生がオリジナルにデザインしました。鋳物を使っていますが、大学にあるコンピュータ制御の造型機で型を作り、それを鋳物屋さんに渡すという最新技術を使って伝統的な鋳物製蝋燭立てを作ったことも面白い点かもしれません。

　和蝋燭の温もりを「蝋燭物語」という私たちのデザインを通して皆様にお伝えできれば、プロジェクトメンバー全員の喜びです。

Noriaki Matui, a Japanese-style candle craftsman and Design
department of Aichi Sangyo University have recently become very
interesting in developing a new way for people to become more
familiar with Japanese-style candles. The main purpose of this
project is to let young people understand the charm of a genuine
Japanese-style candle.

This project actually started two years ago. When I took my
students to a candle studio for the first time, they were surprised
at the fact that no one knew anything about Japanese-style candles.
At this same time they were quite impressed that these candles were
made from only refined materials through various manufacturing
processes. This visit triggered them to begin this project
The project and its design essentially started in order to answer
the following simple questions; “What is a Japanese-style
candle? How are they made? How are they used?”
Therefore, we would like to propose the following three points to
help people understand the processing of making Japanese candles.

1) Put all the materials in one package.
2) Make a brochure describing all the materials used in making a
Japanese-style candle, so that people can be more familiar with it.
3) A natural colored cloth should be used when wrapping a Japanese-
style candle, so that it can be recognized from an ordinary candle.

What we would like to sell is not only a Japanese-style candle
itself, but the related story of manufacturing it. For that reason,
we named this article “Rousoku-monogatari” in Japanese.

Furthermore, we did not pay too much respect to
“tradition” but instead to the use of a genuine denim
cloth with a contemporary symbol mark as the wrapping material.
However, at a meeting at the Okazaki Chamber of Commerce there were
some comments about this cloth wrapping style by some of the female
clerks. For example, they commented that “cloth-wrapping looks
very nice but it’s impossible to see the candles through
it”. “Cloth-wrapping is not a proper way of selling at
the museum in Okazaki.” Therefore a new version of a
transparent boxed type wrapping was also introduced. This was quite
successful as the candles could be seen through the box.

A candle holder was also designed by one of our students. This mold
was manufactured by a Rapid Proto
type Machine controlled by computer. After that it was passed on to
the cast manufacturing industry for use. In another words, it was
made from a traditional technique using the latest technology.

It will be our great pleasure for everyone interested in Japanese
candles if our project has helped in any way.
